Methane Emissions

The Oil and Gas Climate Initiative’s “Aiming for Zero” Program Sets Sights

on 2030 Goal

SUNNYVALE, CA – August 8, 2022 – Kairos Aerospace, the leading oil and gas industry partner for methane reduction and member of The Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) Climate Investments portfolio since 2018, today announced its support of the OGCI Aiming for Zero Methane Emissions Initiative. The initiative joins leading global oil and gas companies to establish an all-in approach that targets methane emissions through a tangible, ambitious effort to eliminate the industry’s methane footprint by 2030. Kairos’ support for the initiative complements its own mission to partner with operators to strategically drive down methane emissions.

“As a long-standing partner of OGCI, we are honored to join this alliance, as we play a critical role in the reduction of methane emissions across the globe.  The commitment of member companies further supports the work we already do with many of them every day, partnering to eliminate emissions and demonstrate companies’ progress towards sustainability targets,” said Steve Deiker, Chief Strategy Officer, Kairos Aerospace.

Launched in March 2022 by leaders of OGCI member companies, including BP, Shell, and Total Energies, the initiative aims for methane emissions to be “treated as seriously as the oil and gas industry already treats safety: aiming for zero and striving to do what it takes to get there.” As a Supporter, Kairos endorses the initiative and commits to encourage new Signatories to join, while being a constructive partner to enable methane reductions in the oil and gas industry.

The initiative’s focus on introducing new technologies to monitor and mitigate methane emissions builds on Kairos’ work to develop, advance, and deploy advanced leak detection technologies to measure methane emissions. Kairos has used its proprietary technology, LeakSurveyor™, to scan for methane emissions across more than 369,000 wells and over 160,000 miles of pipeline last year, resulting in the elimination of more than 29 billion cubic feet of methane releases. Kairos also operates internationally in Colombia, Italy, Canada and Argentina.

“Recognizing that eliminating methane emissions from the oil and gas industry represents one of the best short-term ways to address climate change, I encourage others to join this ambitious effort to eliminate the oil and gas industry’s methane footprint by 2030,” said OGCI Chair Bob Dudley.

Companies joining the Initiative agree to take action in reaching near-zero methane emissions in their operations by reporting transparently, adopting accurate monitoring and measurement technologies, and supporting the implementation of sound regulations. Kairos Aerospace joins existing supporters of the initiative including Worley, IPIECA and Wood Mackenzie.
